In March Johanna Garwood began her term as president of the Association of Registered Interior Designers of Ontario (Eastern Ontario Chapter). Her first president’s message appeared in the Summer 2018 ARIDO EOC newsletter:
What a wonderful time to be an Interior Designer. This year is an exciting one in our profession as we move towards protecting our scope of work and profession by joining the Architects’ Act. I graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1987 with a BID under the Faculty of Architecture and have struggled for years with friends and family to try and educate them on what an Interior Designer does. I think we all have. I wholeheartedly believe that going under the same legislative act as the Architects will increase the professional perception of our industry and the future of our profession. My own firm changed its name recently to incorporate Interior Design in the name and I feel a sense of pride at that. We should all feel proud. We are a unique profession who are artists as well as project managers. We deal in colour and detailing. We are the advocate and voice of the end user. I look forward to this year of serving as your president on the ARIDO EOC board. What a year it will be.
